Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water

by Kim Anthony

Lemon is categorized as a plant, and its properties are often used to make medicine. According to the experts, lemon is used to treat scurvy, a condition caused by not having enough vitamin C. Lemon is also known for being effective in treating the common cold and flu, H1N1 (swine) flu, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), Meniere's disease and kidney stones. It also contains antioxidants called bioflavonoids. Researchers believe these bioflavonoids are primarily responsible for the health benefits of lemon. It's filled with vitamin C -- one lemon has 187 percent the amount you need in a day -- which is a great antioxidant that helps boost your immune system.

Drinking lemon water is reported to have a plethora of great benefits.

Lemon water is one of the simplest additions to a healthy diet that you can find, and it’s extremely inexpensive. I went in search of the benefits. I wanted to find out what makes lemon water so special and how it's beneficial to your health.

After researching the benefits, l decided to put it to the test and try it for myself. I've been drinking lemon water for the past few weeks. Initially, I wasn't in love with the warm water and tart taste (sour flavors are not necessarily my fave), but my taste buds quickly became accustomed it. I found myself looking forward to my new early morning beverage, especially after the noticeable differences -- more energy, better skin and great digestion, to name a few. It's definitely one the simplest, yet best discoveries I've been introduced to by far!

Advantages to Drinking Lemon Water

Weight Loss

Due to lemon water being natural, it adds no calories to your body each time you drink it.

Clears Skin

The vitamin C component, as well as other antioxidants, helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes and helps to combat free radical damage.

Boosts Your Immune System

Lemons are high in vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds. Lemons also contain saponins, which show antimicrobial properties that may help keep cold and flu at bay. Lemons also reduce the amount of phlegm produced by the body.

Cleans out Your Waste Better

The digestive qualities of lemon juice help to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, belching and bloating. Lemon water also helps out the digestive system by reducing the chances for diarrhea and constipation because it promotes proper fluid bowel functions. Lemon juice also helps flush out unwanted materials, in part because lemons increase the rate of urination in the body.

Freshens Breath

Besides fresher breath, lemons have been known to help relieve tooth pain and gingivitis. Citric acid can, however, erode tooth enamel, so you should be somewhat preventative. It's reportedly best to brush your teeth before you drink lemon water, or wait a significant amount of time after to brush your teeth. It is also recommended to rinse your mouth with purified water after you finish your lemon water.

Balances pH Levels

Lemons are one of the most alkalizing foods for the body. They are acidic on their own, but inside our bodies, they’re alkaline. Lemons contain both citric and ascorbic acid which are easily metabolized in the body, allowing the mineral content of lemons to help alkalize the blood.

Reduces Hunger Cravings

Together with its property of cleaning out your colon, lemon water's effect on your hunger cravings is a one-two combination in the effort to help you reduce weight.

DIRECTIONS:

Squeeze 1/2 a fresh lemon (preferably organic) into a glass of warm purified water with each glass. I drink it down first thing in the morning for maximum results. You should be using purified water and it should be lukewarm, not scalding hot. You want to avoid ice cold water, since that can be a lot for your body to process and it takes more energy to process ice cold water than the warm. Always use fresh lemons, organic if possible, never bottled lemon juice.
