Hope DeAngelis Schmid
As we roll into summer, it's time to rev up your workouts to get bikini-ready, pick up a new bottle of self-tanner, and schedule a date to work on those beachy highlights.
But what can you do with your hair to look fresh for summer 2011 if your calendar doesn't allow for hours at the shore?
"Try peek-a-boo highlights," says Maria Spindler, master stylist with Aveda's Beau Totale Salon in Northern Virginia. "These are dispersed under the top layer of your hair so that, as you move or when you wear your hair up, the highlights will peek out." The balayage method offers the most natural look. With balayage, the highlights are painted or swept on, with a lighter hand at the roots and more dye at the ends. The effect is natural and sun-kissed, and when it grows out it's with less obvious root growth than traditional highlights.
Stick with caramel highlights if you're dark blond to brunette, since it's likely that the colors will lighten as you spend more time in the sun. Platinum highlights are best left to those with light blond hair.
