Stress and Your Skin
“What is happening with my skin? Why am I breaking out now?” If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Every day, women come into my office feeling frustrated, bewildered and unattractive because they are experiencing acne breakouts along their jawlines, chins and backs. Many patients between the ages of 35 and 60 tell me that they have never experienced acne before.
Why the sudden, dramatic blemishes? Stress -- from work, financial struggles, family and relationships. Science confirms that stress activates the adrenal system, which causes a hormone called cortisol to pump through the body. (Some of us are biologically wired to crank out especially high levels of cortisol when feeling besieged.) Cortisol stimulates the secretion of oil, and when that oil is combined with the omnipresent bacteria in your skin, the result can be those unsightly pimples.
Soothing and preventing an outbreak of acne requires a well-balanced approach that combines lifestyle adjustments, an appropriate skin care regimen, and (in some cases) medical intervention.
The first step is a deep-cleansing facial performed by a trained esthetician to remove oil, dirt, blackheads and whiteheads from your pores. Or start with gentle exfoliating treatments at home, including over-the-counter microdermabrasion kits and peels. The important aspect of at-home treatments is to make sure that they are right for your skin and that you’re not overdoing it. For example, when you use a facial scrub, don’t use a peel at the same time.
Next, add products to your skin care regimen that will help control your breakouts, such as a cleanser or cleansing pads that contain salicylic or glycolic acid.
I have personally found exercise, yoga and acupuncture to be helpful in controlling out-of-control skin problems. Taking part in a simple breathing exercise or going for a walk can make a significant difference in how you feel emotionally. Add in a warm bath with aromatherapy candles for a lovely, soothing way to end a frantic day.
