Put a Brake on Blond Hair Color

Just as we love wearing the rich brown tones in fashion this season (thanks, Marc Jacobs and Chanel), our hair color should follow suit. Or as we say in the business, “In winter we always go warmer.”

That means darkening bright blond hair -- the same hair that looked so right with a summer tan. During the winter, light blond locks blend in with our winter-pale complexion, resulting in a flat, washed-out look that can be aging. To perk things up, we can wear brighter makeup -- but that hardly seems very modern. This year, try dialing things down.

If you’re a single-process blond, switch to a much warmer strawberry blond and watch your skin tone come alive. If sun streaks are more your style, have your colorist apply honey-blond highlights against a base of chestnut brown. The contrast of this base against your skin, with the golden streaks against the brown, is as flattering as it is multidimensional.

However, there’s an exception to every rule -- and in this case it’s my Palm Beach clients. They want 100 percent blond all year long. I guess there’s no real pale season in sunny Florida!
