Finding the Perfect Swimsuit

Like it or not, it happens every summer.

Perhaps our warmer-climate sisters may not feel it as much as us colder-climate ladies; however, swimsuit season appears, rain or shine. And the search for the perfect bathing costume has us facing thousands -- yes, that many -- selections of styles in the stores.

We all know the mental state that the wrong fit of a personal clothing piece can stir in us. Most of us search high and low for the perfect jeans or have a favorite blouse that never fails to boost our spirits. So it is quite understandable why the smallest bit of clothing is a big deal.

My advice to any woman in search of a great suit this summer?

Start by reading your favorite sites and magazines, and take comfort in knowing that what editors and stylists are recommending comes with careful consideration and experience. (I once chose between more than 850 suits for a single story.) Then, visit your local department store and let the sales associate tell you what style and cut are the best for you. Ask questions about fit and materials, and make sure you tell the associate your desires. Are you an active beachgoer or more of a lounge-in-the-sun type? And remember: If you're too shy to come out of the fitting room, it isn't the suit for you.
