Should you have HARD goals?
Robert Pagliarini
Are you struggling to find a new career? Have you lost your motivation to lose that extra 25 pounds? Do you dream of achieving more in life but seem to always fall short? If reaching your goals seems like an impossible challenge, don't worry! There's a new science to achieving the life you want and a new way of working toward success.
In my interview with
Sound difficult? Don't worry! HARD goals aren't literally hard goals. HARD is an acronym for creating goals that will activate your brain for extraordinary results:
Heartfelt: Build a strong emotional connection.
Animated: Visualize it.
Required: Create a sense of urgency.
Difficult: Get out of your comfort zone!
Are you ready to start setting HARD goals? Here's a brief excerpt from Mark's interview to help get you started. Then, be sure to listen to the full
Robert: What would be that first step someone should think about taking in order to create HARD goals?
Mark: The first thing is to take one of your goals that means something to you, that you want to do but you've been struggling a bit with, and you make it 20 percent more difficult than it currently is. That is going to instantly wake your brain up. And then, the second thing is to try to visualize it. What is this going to look like? Try and bring the visual senses into this because, if it's just a number on a sheet of paper, that's usually not enough. We want you to take it a level beyond that. So, you want to add that visual component in. And third, once you've got those two pieces in place -- you've made them a bit harder, you've asked what they actually look like, you've visualized them -- in doing all that, you actually take care of a lot of the heartfelt step as well! Then you can ask yourself (sort of a final step), "Okay, what's something I can do today to start pushing this thing forward? What's the one step I can take right now that is going to move the ball forward a bit?" And once you have that, go do it. Wake up tomorrow and ask yourself the same question. Those are really sort of the 1-2-3 of how you get started with this. Take an existing goal; make it more difficult to wake up the brain; visualize it; animate it; bring it to life in your brain; and then from there, figure out how you're going to operationalize it with one thing. And that's usually the key right there.
