B.J. Upton's five-year deal worth $75.25 million made him the highest-paid player in Braves history.

The average annual salary Upton will receive exceeded the $15 million Derek Lowe got from 2009-11.

The 28-year-old outfielder chose the Braves over the Phillies and the Nationals.

Along with enhancing the Braves' lineup with his coveted combination of speed and power, Upton will bring his highly regarded defensive skills to an outfield that already possesses Gold Glove right fielder Jason Heyward.

He will replace Michael Bourn in center field, as the Braves continue to search for a left fielder via a trade or the free-agent market.

The Braves did not have the financial resources to compete for Josh Hamilton, and they were hesitant about bringing Bourn back with a five-year deal.

Much of Bourn's value is his speed, but he is turning 30 in December.

The younger Upton has both power and speed.
