Oakland, CA

The Oakland Athletics have signed former American League Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon to a one-year deal, putting emphasis on his quality of play last season rather than dwell on the 50-game suspension he incurred for using performance-enhancing substance.

"One of the reasons I think we won a lot last year was because of the depth in our rotation, and we've still got such a young staff," said A's general manager Billy Beane. "Bart was so good for us last year, and given the cost of those type of players, we thought it was the best thing for us next year."

The veteran pitcher tallied a 10-9 record and 3.43 ERA in 24 starts for the A's last season before being suspended for 50 games after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

Colon has five games remaining on his suspension.

"When he serves his suspension, he'll have paid his dues as laid down by the labor agreement," said Beane.

Colon's 10 victories last season were the most for him since garnering 21 victories in 2005 en route to winning the American League Cy Young Award while pitching for the Los Angeles Angels.

The 39-year-old won at least 14 contests in each season from 1998-2005. A two-time All-Star, Colon has totaled 171 victories during his 15-year career.

"We liked the way he pitched on the field. We liked his performance on the field. His on-the-field performance is the reason for this decision," said Beane. "I think he showed how beneficial throwing strikes are. I think that was the best influence he could have had on our young guys."

Colon is currently pitching in the Dominican Winter League. He has compiled a 1-0 mark and 2.89 ERA in two outings.
