The New York Yankees, desperately looking for scoring help after injuries to sluggers Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez, have acquired three-time All-Star outfielder Vernon Wells from the Los Angeles Angels.

Wells waived his no-trade clause and accepted a trade to the Yankees, pending approval of Major League Baseball.

A baseball executive who spoke on condition of anonymity, told USA Today that the Angels will shoulder $28 million to $29 million of Wells' remaining two-year deal worth $42 million.

The executive added that the Yankees will shell out most of the $13 million difference to this year's payroll. The Yankees are expected to surrender a low-level Minor League player in the trade.

Wells, hitting .361 with four homers and 11 RBI in Spring Training, is expected to be the Yankees' starting left fielder for at least a month until Granderson returns from a fractured right forearm.

"I don't think it's ever easy saying goodbye,'' Wells told reporters as he left the Angels' parking lot, "but I'm excited.''

The 34-year-old Wells, who was traded by the Toronto Blue Jays to the Angels in 2011, struggled the last two seasons.

With the acquisition of Albert Pujols and the emergence of rookie Mike Trout, Wells was relegated to the bench last season, hitting .230 with 11 homers and 29 RBI in 77 games.
