First baseman Paul Goldschmidt has reached an agreement with the Arizona Diamondbacks on a five-year contract extension worth $32 million, with a team option worth $14.5 million on the sixth year

According to MLB.com, the deal will cover Goldschmidt's arbitration seasons and one of his free-agent years. If the option is exercised, it would cover two free-agent seasons.

An official announcement could come Friday night or Saturday morning.

The 25-year-old Goldschmidt was first called to the Majors on Aug. 1, 2011, and quickly became a favorite of the coaching staff for his approach to the game.

Last season, Goldschmidt took hold of the starting role at first base last season and batted .286 with 20 home runs, 82 RBIs and a .359 on-base percentage in 145 games.

Aside from Goldschmidt , Arizona has locked up several players to extensions in the last year, among them catcher Miguel Montero, second baseman Aaron Hill and Martin Prado, who was acquired from Atlanta in an offseason trade for outfielder Justin Upton.

Earlier, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Thursday that he was in favor of an extension for Goldschmidt.

"Goldy is a model citizen," Gibson said. "He's a model organization guy. You'd want anybody to pattern themselves after Paul Goldschmidt. No reservations about an extension at all."
