New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter's surgically repaired left ankle was diagnosed with a small crack.

General manager Brian Cashman said the crack will not require surgery but will take from four to eight weeks to heal, keeping Jeter sidelined until after the All-Star break.

Jeter originally dislocated the ankle in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series in October.

Dr. Robert Anderson, who diagnosed the shortstop in Charlotte, N.C., told Cashman that "95 percent" of the people who have this injury come back from it fine.

But Jeter, 38, will need close to a full spring training before he will be ready to play in a major league game.

Originally, the Yankees were optimistic that Jeter would be ready for Opening Day, but his rehabilitation has been marred by setbacks. Jeter took this past weekend off, and the Yankees cut the amount of groundballs he was fielding to try and limit the impact on the ankle. On Wednesday, he went for the previously unscheduled trip to Charlotte.

Next week, Jeter will return to Charlotte for further evaluation from Dr. Anderson.

Cashman said he is satisfied with Eduardo Nunez as his primary shortstop and Jayson Nix as the backup in Jeter's absence.

Nunez, who has struggled in his career defensively, has yet to make an error this season and entered Thursday hitting .240 with a .603 OPS.
