David Ortiz's Continued Dominance

Even at 40 years old, Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz continues to wreak havoc in the batter's box. One visualization from PointAfter illustrates his dominance at the dish.

In his final season before retirement, David Ortiz has shown no sign of slowing down -- well, at least in the batter's box.

The iconic 40-year-old slugger continues to ooze confidence at the dish, where he keeps on dominating opposing pitchers as if they're setting up baseballs on a tee for the jovial designated hitter. Big Papi leads MLB in doubles (29), slugging percentage (.715) and OPS (1.138). He also ranks second in the Majors in on-base percentage (.423) and RBI (57).

On the far right of the visualization is Ortiz, boasting a league-leading .371 ISO. What makes that mark even more impressive is the big fella's propensity to avoid striking out.

There is a slight correlation between K% and ISO across the league, signaling that more powerful hitters tend to strike out more -- likely because they enjoy swinging for the fences with an all-or-nothing approach. Ortiz, however, bucks that trend with a miniscule K% of 15 percent.

Despite his advanced age, Ortiz remains one of the best hitters in the game. It's truly unbelievable what the veteran has accomplished at the plate this season, and while he could certainly keep playing past age 40, fans will just have to enjoy watching him while they still can.

"I'm happy with the decision that I made," Ortiz told Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan about his impending retirement. "I think I played enough baseball."
