Becky Hammon recorded 19 points and 5 dimes to guide Russia past Turkey, 66-63, in Tuesday's women's basketball quarterfinals at the Basketball Arena in Olympic Park.
Russia survived a spirited challenge from the Turkish squad as Hammon scored a crucial layup to give her team a 64-62 advantage with 14 seconds left.
After finishing with a 3-2 record in Group B play, the Russians faced Turkey in a rematch of the 2011 EuroBasket women's tournament.
As expected, both traded bombs from the get-go and kept the game competitive up to the final second.
Russia took a 34-28 lead at the break but Turkey came out strong in the second half and tied the score at 51-51 at the end of the third quarter.
Russia and Turkey went back and forth in the final period but the game all came down to execution.
Off a timeout, Hammon took the ball to the rack with the hope of absorbing a foul on any Turkish player.
The San Antonio Silver Star guard indeed drew a foul from Nevriye Yilmaz and still made the tough layup to put her team ahead by two points with 14 seconds left on the clock.
Hammon missed her bonus free-throw, giving Turkey a chance to snatch the victory from behind.
However, Turkey's Kuanitra Hollingsworth split her free-throw attempts and Russian nabbed a crucial offensive rebound on the other end as time expired.
Russia punched its way to the semifinal round and will face France, which edged Czech Republic 71-68 in the quarterfinals.
